Best Practices in Milling and Profiling

More than any other pavement property, pavement smoothness translates directly to improved drivability, fuel economy, and driver satisfaction. Ensuring a smooth surface starts with the milling or profiling operation to ensure an optimal foundation for the new surface or structure. Achieving smoothness during profiling can not only add more bonus dollars into the contractor's pocket, it increases the ability and ease to achieve smoothness for the surface layer.

Speaker: Tom Chastain, Wirtgen, Milling Application Specialist

Date: Nov. 12, 2:00 p.m. EST

Best Practices in Paver Operations

The purpose of the paver is to place a uniform pavement mix at the correct grade. In order to accomplish this feat, it is crucial to understand best practices of paver operations. This session will provide attendees with the understanding needed to ensure proper placement of asphalt mixtures. This session will discuss:

  • Screed set up and operation
  • Effective joint construction
  • Troubleshooting

Speaker: Jeff Ensell, Roadtec

Date: Dec. 8, 2:00 p.m. EST

Best Practices for Compaction

Compaction is when an asphalt mixture turns into an asphalt pavement. Proper compaction techniques are critical to asphalt pavement performance and longevity. Compaction not only affects performance but often determines how much or if a contractor will get paid for the work. This session will review compaction best practices in order to achieve quality pavements profitably.

Speaker: Erv Dukatz, Ph.D., Mathy Construction Co.

Best Practices in Work Zone Safety

Operating close to traffic and around complex machines with limited sight lines is inherently dangerous. This webinar will discuss how to set up paving work zones to protect workers, including discussion of special considerations for nighttime paving.

Speaker: Cal Beyer, Lakeside Industries Inc., and Bruce Drewes, 3T Group

Date: Feb. 25, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. EST

Best Practices in Positioning Technology in Asphalt Paving

Positioning technology for asphalt paving comes in several formats. Two dimensional systems include using combinations of Sonic, Cross Slope and Laser technologies. Three dimensional systems can add Global Positioning Systems or Local Positioning Systems which utilize multiple robotic stations to control the machine. Learning how to accurately work these technologies is essential in today's paving world. Achieving a superior finished product with 2D or 3D paving systems comes from a strong understanding of how these tools function and trusting the systems to provide increased production and accuracy for asphalt pavers.

Speaker: Kevin Garcia, Business Area Manager – Paving and Specialty Construction; Heavy Civil Construction Division, Trimble; and Brian Girouard, Sales Engineer for the Americas, Trimble

Best Practices for Residential and Commercial Paving

The commercial paver must employ good paving practices, but the site-specific needs and limitations of a commercial site can make the challenge of sculpting a pavement to meet the customer’s needs and expectation especially difficult. Because commercial paving can be so challenging, having a good understanding of the principles of quality construction and utilizing best practices are necessary to achieve the sort of work that earns repeat business.
