Federal Trucking Hours of Service Regulations

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a separate administration within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and is charged with reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. Individuals driving large trucks (any combined truck/trailer weighing over 10,000 pounds) that are involved with the interstate transport of materials, are subject to the FMCSA's Hours of Service (HoS) regulations which limit a drivers' hours behind the wheel. The HoS regulations were revised in December 2011, finalized, and subsequently (partially) suspended. Specific requirements under the HoS can be obtained from FMCSA's website. The construction industry has been afforded some prior relief from these regulations but is requesting additional relief in the next highway reauthorization bill.
