Sustainable Asphalt 'Practical Guide' Series Offers How-to Guide

SIP-104 Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide Book 4Fourth Book Provides Guidance on Developing, Implementing Sustainability Programs

The fourth installment in the Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide series, “How to Develop a Sustainability Program,” is now available. The 50-page book outlines the components of a successful sustainability program, along with guidance for developing and implementing a sustainability plan, as well as for reporting on plan progress.

The book will be formally released Tuesday, November 12, during its accompanying webinar. For more information and to register for the webinar, visit www.AsphaltPavement.org/PracticalGuide.

"Many asphalt pavement producers already engage in sustainable practices, but they don’t always have a formal framework for recognizing, quantifying, and reporting out on these activities," said Joseph Shacat, Director of Sustainable Pavements for the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA). "This guide helps in building out that framework, drawing inspiration and examples from well-known companies in the sector that have a good deal of experience with running sustainability programs."

Authored by Adam J.T. Hand, Ph.D., P.E. of the University of Nevada, Reno, and Stephen T. Muench, Ph.D., P.E. of the University of Washington, the Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide series was released over the course of 2019. The first three volumes — "Sustainability Overview," "Sustainability Specifics," and "Procuring & Evaluating Sustainability" — were released earlier this year, and the four volumes have also been compiled into in a single tome, Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide. Each volume in the series is accompanied by a webinar explaining how the concept of sustainability can be applied in asphalt pavement production and road construction. The webinars and books are available at no charge via www.AsphaltPavement.org/PracticalGuide.

In How to Develop a Sustainability Program, Hand and Muench outline factors to consider in establishing a sustainability program, the importance of the goal-setting process, and the need for change management to ensure successful outcomes.

"Taken all together, Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide gives asphalt mixture producers, construction companies, and pavement owners a good understanding of how to recognize sustainable practices, build on them, and make sustainability a pillar of their operations in a way that delivers economic, environmental, and social benefits," Shacat said.

The Sustainable Asphalt Pavements: A Practical Guide series was developed with the support of the Federal Highway Administration through the Accelerated Implementation and Deployment of Pavement Technologies (AID-PT) program.
