Charles F. Potts

The Hot-Mix Asphalt Hall of Fame recognizes Charles F. Potts for contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the advancement of the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) industry. He is a recognized industry expert in the field of HMA materials and construction and has spent his entire professional career working with HMA.

 

Mr. Potts earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the Citadel and West VIrginia University, respectively. After briefly working for the North Carolina Department of Transportation, he worked as a bituminous engineer for the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT), and advanced to become state materials engineer.

 

During his years at the Florida DOT, Mr. Potts did much to advance asphalt technology, especially in the area of recycling. He is a great proponent of recycling and was heavily involved in developing Florida's recycling program. Because of his contributions, Florida became one of the leading states in recycling.

 

In the early 1990s, Mr. Potts assumed leadership of APAC Inc., the nation's largest hot-mix asphalt producer at the time. Mr. Pott's influence on quality asphalt pavements was recognized immediately by the states that APAC did work in. Under Mr. Pott's leadership at APAC, the HMA industry and traveling public greatly benefited from the innovations he implemented. Mr. Potts joined Heritage Construction and Materials as CEO in 2004 and continues to exert a positive influence on the industry.

 

Mr. Potts is past chairman of the board of the National Asphalt Pavement Association and former chairman of the board of directors for the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT). He has served on many other boards and associations in a leadership capacity. He is also author or co-author of over 100 published technical reports or articles related to the highway construction industry.

 

Throughout his long career, Mr. Potts has traveled the nation and the world as a spokesman and advocate for high-quality hot-mix asphalt pavements. Mr. Potts's active leadership roles in NAPA and NCAT, as well as his leadership in developing quality construction practices, have been an outstanding benefit to the hot-mix asphalt industry.
