Carl L. Monismith

 

Professor Monismith received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1950 and his M.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1954 from the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career as a staff member in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in 1951, was named Chairman of the Department from 1974 to 1979 and has continued his work as Robert Horonjeff Professor of Civil Engineering at the University up to the present time (2005). He is internationally recognized for his workin the fields of pavement design, rehabilitation and asphalt paving technology.

 

As an expert in the field, Professor Monismith developed techniques for pavement design and analysis that are nationally recognized and in use today. He has served on the Transportation Research Noard as a committee member and as chairman of the Pavement Design Section. He has also served as committee member and chairman of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements and was actively involved in the development of the SHRP program. Member of the National Academy of Engineering-nationally and internationally recognized-lectured at the invitation of governments in several countries of the world including South Africa and Australia.

 

In addition to his leadership positions in the industry, Professor Monismith is an outstanding teacher at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as a mentor of his numerous graduate students. Many of his graduate students hold positions in government, academia and industry.

 

Professor Monismith's leadership efforts over the past fifty-plus years have led to great contributions in flexible pavement design and significant advancements in the Hot Mix Asphalt Industry.
