International Conference on Decarbonization of Asphalt Pavements

September 29 – October 1, 2025

The International Conference on the Decarbonization of Asphalt Pavements aims to explore innovative solutions and best practices for reducing the carbon footprint associated with asphalt pavements. The event provides an unparalleled platform for sharing research findings, discussing challenges, and networking with global leaders committed to sustainable pavement technologies. Click EVENT DETAILS for complete information about our call for abstracts, due November 1, 2024.

Researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry experts are invited to submit abstracts for the International Conference on Decarbonization of Asphalt Pavements by November 1, 2024.

Abstract Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts must be written in English and should not exceed 300 words.
  • All submissions should provide a concise overview of the research objectives, methodology, results, and implications.
  • Abstracts should be original work that has not been published or presented at other conferences.
  • Each submission must clearly indicate the presenting author and include contact information.
  • Abstracts should be submitted electronically via the conference website by November 1, 2024.

Topics of Particular Interest

We are especially interested in abstracts that highlight the following topics:

1. Innovative Materials and Technologies

  • Development and performance evaluation of low-carbon asphalt mixtures.
  • Use of waste and recycled materials in asphalt production.
  • Advances in warm-mix and cold-mix asphalt technologies that reduce energy consumption during production.

2. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Pavement Systems

  • Case studies on the environmental impact of asphalt pavement production, installation, maintenance, and end-of-life management.
  • Comparative LCAs of traditional and innovative asphalt mixtures and asphalt pavement design.

3. Carbon Sequestration in Asphalt Pavements

  • Research on the use of biobased materials in asphalt pavements for Biobased Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) and other materials that can be used for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).
  • Long-term performance and environmental impact assessment of carbon-sequestered pavements.

4. Policy and Economic Analyses

  • Impact of governmental policies on the adoption of low carbon asphalt pavement materials and technologies.
  • Cost-benefit analyses of implementing decarbonization strategies in the asphalt industry.
  • Low carbon procurement and project delivery programs.

5. Field Performance and Case Studies

  • Real-world applications of low-carbon asphalt pavements.
  • Performance tracking and evaluation methodologies for sustainable pavements.

6. Emerging Technologies and Future Trends

  • Exploration of next-generation materials and technologies aimed at pavement decarbonization.
  • Predictive models and tools for assessing the carbon footprint of pavement systems.

Review Process

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed by an international panel of experts. Selection criteria include relevance to the conference themes, originality of the work, scientific rigor, and potential impact on the field. Submitters must disclose any potential conflict of interest related to the content (e.g., commercial interest, affiliation with a vendor, receipt of royalties) and affirm that their participation will not be used to sell a particular product or service. NAPA can reject or rescind the acceptance of an abstract due to any conflict of interest discovered at any time.

Acceptance Notification

  1. Submitters will be notified about the status of their abstract submission(s) via email no later than December 15, 2024.
  2. Accepted abstract submitters will be asked to prepare for review a draft paper or technical brief (4 to 12 pages in length, following TRB formatting) by March 15, 2025.
  3. Upon completion of the review, all comments must be addressed by July 1, 2025, for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
  4. Accepted presenters must submit their PowerPoint presentation by September 15, 2025. Additional instructions will be provided with notification of final acceptance.

Podium Presentation Format

  • All podium presentations will be done live and in person.
  • Podium presentations are allotted 20 minutes.
  • Presentations focused on similar topics will be scheduled back-to-back and followed by a question-and-answer time for the speaker panel.

A student poster competition is addressed in a separate call to action. Abstracts for poster submissions are due May 1, 2025.

Join us in paving the way to a more sustainable future!
