General Session I: Passing of the Gavel and Keynote with Mike Rowe: Lessons from the Dirt

Mike Rowe Photo 002

From the Baltimore Opera to QVC shopping channel, Executive Producer and TV Host Mike Rowe has had hundreds of jobs and relished his role as a chronic freelancer. He's best known as the "dirtiest man on TV," a title he earned on the hit TV series Dirty Jobs. He has narrated hundreds of documentaries about space, nature, dinosaurs, and how stuff works. He has also forged a handful of partnerships with iconic brands and filmed a boatload of Ford commercials.

Most recently, Mike is in search of remarkable people making a difference in their communities on Facebook's groundbreaking series Returning the Favor. You can also watch him on the TV series Somebody's Gotta Do It on TBN or listen to him on The Way I Heard It, a five-minute podcast of short mysteries for the curious mind with a short attention span.

In addition, Mike runs the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides scholarships to people getting trained for skilled jobs that are in demand and has granted, or helped facilitate the granting of, more than $5 million in technical and vocational education for trade schools across the country. In his spare time, Mike keeps a lively conversation with more than 5 million Facebook friends, where he talks about everything from the musings of his persnickety terrier named Freddy to the merits and pitfalls of blind patriotism.

Mike will share with us the surprising lessons he has learned as an apprentice traversing all 50 states and attempting 300 different jobs.

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

General Session II: The Future of Transportation and What This Means for the Asphalt Industry

New research suggests that children born today may never drive a car. The auto industry's embrace of self-driving technology is accelerating and within five years it is likely that autonomous, driverless cars will be on the road. But what role will the road play?

This session will build on last year’s session on Disruptive Technologies to further explore the role highways, road infrastructure, and equipment will play for the three revolutions coming: electric vehicles, automated vehicles, and shared mobility. Come learn what these revolutions will mean for our roads and the asphalt pavement industry.

Speaker:

Carlos Braceras, Executive Director, Utah Department of Transportation

11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Education Workshop: Positioning for Emerging Markets in Green Construction

It can be hard to keep up with emerging trends in green construction. Customers in the building industry have driven demand for green construction to 33% of building project activity as of 2015, and some infrastructure owners are poised for large scale implementation of sustainability metrics at the state and local levels. Whereas the green building industry relies heavily on green rating systems such as LEED to ensure projects meet their sustainability goals, infrastructure owners are incorporating other tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into the procurement process. Contractors can provide better service to their customers and gain a leg up on the competition by understanding how the evolving roadmap of green construction can affect their business.

Key Takeaways:

  • Learn about emerging trends in sustainability rating systems for the green building sector
  • Understand how infrastructure owners are incorporating LCA into their procurement process

General Session III: Pulling Your Weight: Your Biggest Competitive Advantage is YOU

Levine A - Photo 002

Alison Levine explains how, with a little creativity and a lot of heart, you can uncover hidden talents and turn perceived weaknesses into strengths.

She recounts her history-making expedition to the South Pole in which she crossed 600-miles of Antarctic ice on skis while hauling 150 lbs of her gear in a sled harnessed to her waist, becoming he first American to complete the particularly grueling route across the frozen continent. But her trip was fraught with unexpected challenges. What she struggled with most wasn’t the extreme temperatures, dangerous terrain or feelings of isolation. It was the physical challenge of trying to haul a sled of supplies that far outweighed her. Alison was the smallest, weakest member of her team, and was not able to keep pace with her taller, stronger teammates. But a surprising change of strategy orchestrated by the expedition leader helped to uncover some unique strengths that she did not know she had, and as a result they were able to reach the South Pole as a stronger team than they were when the journey began.

If we are hyper-focused on our own shortcomings, we overlook our hidden talents and that can lead us to success. With the right kind of leadership mindset, perceived weaknesses can be turned into strengths. It just takes a little creativity and a lot of heart.
