Lakeside Industries, Cornejo & Sons Honored for Safety Innovation in the Asphalt Pavement Industry

Awards Program Celebrates Innovations That Improve Worker Safety

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) honored the winner and finalist of the 2019 Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award at a ceremony during the association's 65th Annual Meeting today (February 5).

The Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award, part of NAPA's Operational Excellence Awards program, recognizes the development and implementation of innovative ideas that lead to improved worker safety in a roadway work zone, plant site, or quarry environment, and companies whose safety practices go above and beyond normal safety practices.

"NAPA members strive for excellence in constructing high-quality asphalt pavements and in every aspect of their operations. The two Operational Excellence Awards categories — Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation and Community Involvement — recognize a company’s commitment to operational practices that make them good contractors, good industry ambassadors, and good neighbors," said NAPA Chairman John Harper.

Lakeside Industries Inc. of Issaquah, Washington, was honored as the 2019 award winner for its Field Trauma Kit for Worksites. This kit is designed to provide intermediate life support before paramedics arrive on the scene in the event of a traumatic workplace injury. It consists of a 10-gallon waterproof, yellow dry bag packed with first-aid supplies crew members can use to provide advanced first aid. A member of the Seattle Fire Department assisted Lakeside in developing the contents of the kit, which includes a satellite phone, a tourniquet, and extra gauze, among other items.

Cornejo & Sons Inc. in Wichita, Kansas, was honored as a finalist for the 2019 award for its Entering and Exiting Work Zone Flags. Cornejo & Sons developed color-coded flags and windshield stickers for each type of fleet vehicle. The flags and stickers allow drivers to enter and exit work zones without verbal communication, minimizing the chances for traffic control personnel to be struck by entering and exiting vehicles, and allow for specified entrances and exits that drivers can see from a further distance for different materials being delivered. In addition, the system decreases congestion at entrances and exits, as well as the blocking of entrances and exits by subcontractors and third-party vehicles.

The Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award is sponsored by Asphalt Pro. The Operational Excellence Awards are a counterpart to NAPA’s annual Quality in Construction Awards, which recognize asphalt paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements.

The NAPA Awards Program recognizes and encourages continuous improvement in all aspects of paving and asphalt operations. For more information about the NAPA Awards program, or to nominate a project or company for an award, visit www.AsphaltPavement.org/Awards.
