Ned W. Bechthold


The Hot-Mix Asphalt Hall of Fame recognizes Ned W. Bechthold for contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the advancement of the hot-mix asphalt industry. In 1959 Mr. Bechthold received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. Following graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. Upon his completion of duties as an officer, he went to work for his father, which was the start of his long career in the hot-mix asphalt field, and he helped to make Payne & Dolan, Inc., a very successful and prosperous company.


Part of what made his company so successful was Mr. Bechthold's strong sense to give back to the community whenever possible and his desire to help people make better lives for themselves. Mr. Bechthold began programs within his company to strengthen minority hiring and retention in his state which have been ised as a model nationally.


Mr. Bechthold has served the National Asphalt Pavement Association in many capacities. He began as a state Director for the association and served on many committees. He was a primary contributor and instrumental in establishing the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and served as Chairman of the NCAT committee. He served on the NAPA Research & Education (NAPAREF) Board as a trustee, as well as serving on the NAPAREF Scholarship Committee.


Mr. Bechthold was alsoa NAPA Executive Committee member and served as Secretary. He was an original member of the Engineering Controls Task Force and his company participated in the field demonstrations of new control equipment. 


Mr. Bechthold's active leadership roles in NAPA and the founding of NCAT, as wellas his efforts in creating a stronger work force and promoting quality construction, have been a tremendous benefit to the Hot-Mix Asphalt Industry.
