John S. Spangler

 

John Spangler was an innovator and visionary for the Hot Mix Asphalt industry. Mr. Spangler's career spanned the worlds of engineering, associations, and contracting. After earning his BS degree in engineering from Penn State University, he worked as an engineer for several years and was executive director of the National Asphalt Pavement Association from 1963 to 1968.

 

After working as executive director of the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana Inc., he went into the contractiong business in 1974. He eventually reorganized three companies into Milestone Contractors at the time of his death.

 

Mr. Spangler was Chairman of NAPA in 1999. During his term in office, he envisioned the concept and helped create the World of Asphalt Show and Conference, which brings together all those involved in the industry in an educational forum to further the goals of quality and innovation of asphalt pavements.

 

His commitment to education, research, and advances in the performance of pavement quality led to his being an integral and moving force behind the development of the National Center for Asphalt Technology at Auburn University where he also served as Chairman.


A good manager, and a gifted leader, Mr. Spangler's character combined commitment, enthusiam, passion, generosity, and dedication. He was a tireless advocate for asphalt and for the highway industry.
