Dr J. Don Brock

 

Folowing graduation from Central High School, Chattanooga, TN, Dr. Brock attended the University of Tennessee, graduating with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. He then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating with an M.S. degree in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1965 in Mechanical Engineering. In 1965, he joined Chattanooga Systems, Inc. as Vice President; in 1969 he was named Vice President of CMI Systems in Chattanooga and in 1970 was named President of CMI Systems, Division of CMI Corporation of Oklahoma City, OK. In 1970 he also served as President of Textile Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of CMI Corporation and as Corporate Vice President, CMI Corporation.

 

In 1972, Dr. Brock established Astec Industries, Inc., Chattanooga, TN, becoming Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Astec and its divisions and subsidiaries.

 

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Brock has been a leader in the development of innovative Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) engineering and technology practices and procedures. His developments in HMA production and placement equipment technology and in specifications have led to improvements in the quality of HMA throughout the United States and the world. Dr. Brock presently holds over 80 U.S. and foreign patents related to construction and textile drying equipment.

 

Dr. Brock has long been involved in the activities of the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), serving on numerous committees and task forces. He also serves on the Board of the National Center for Asphaly Technology (NCAT), Auburn, AL, and is Chairman of NCAT's Applications Steering Committee. He serves on the Board of Advisors, College of Engineering, University of Tennessee, and as a member of the Board of Directors of Crown Andersen, Inc., Atlanta, GA. He has also been active in the Transportation Research Board, the Chattanooga Manufacturing Association, and the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, serving as a member of the Board of Directors.

 

Dr. Brock was named "Man of the Year" in 1983 by the National Asphalt Pavement Association, and received the "Engineer of the Year" award in 1984 and the "Inventor of the Year" award in 1988 from the Chattanooga Area Engineering Societies. He has authored numerous articles and documents on various aspects of HMA technology, and makes many presentations at universities, meetings and workshops at the federal and state levels on technology developnments.
