NAPA Announces Winners of 2018 National Award for Safety Innovation in the Asphalt Pavement Industry

SAF5-Kokosing 1Awards Program Celebrates Innovations That Improve Worker Safety

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has announced the winners of its 2018 Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award. Three companies were recognized at a special ceremony on January 23 during the association's Annual Meeting in Marco Island, Florida.

The Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award recognizes the development and implementation of innovative ideas that lead to improved worker safety in a roadway work zone, plant site, or quarry environment, and companies whose safety practices go above and beyond normal safety practices.

"NAPA members strive for excellence in constructing high-quality asphalt pavements and in every aspect of their operations. The two Operational Excellence Awards categories — Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation and Community Involvement — recognize a company's commitment to operational practices that make them good contractors, good industry ambassadors, and good neighbors," said NAPA Chairman Craig Parker.

Kokosing Materials Inc. of Fredericktown, Ohio, was honored as a winner its Field ID Lockout/Tagout Program. Using an app, Kokosing has digitized and centralized its Lockout/Tagout procedures, making them easily available to team members on their smartphones. Kokosing added disconnects to nearly every electrical component and labeled them with name plates, as well as added pneumatic lockout systems and valves.

Allan Myers in Malvern, Pa., was honored as a finalist for its Portable Crusher with Custom Safety Features. Allan Myers worked with the portable crusher's manufacturer to install customer safety features, including stairs and a catwalk up and over the motor that drives the screen filtering the rock. At the end of the catwalk, there is a way to adjust the chute and ladders were replaced with rolling safety steps that attach to the plant.

Lakeside Industries Inc. of Issaquah, Wash., was honored as a finalist for its Customized Multifunction Safety & Health App. This app allows user to record eight safety functions, including near-hits, safe behaviors or at-risk behaviors, and job site inspections.

The Operational Excellence Awards honor leaders in the asphalt pavement industry for innovation and excellence in community outreach with the Community Involvement. Companies also are lauded for their responsible practices with the Asphalt Operations Safety Innovations Award.

The Operational Excellence Awards are a counterpart to NAPA's annual Quality in Construction Awards, which recognize asphalt paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements.

The NAPA Awards Program recognizes and encourages continuous improvement in all aspects of paving and asphalt operations. The 2019 NAPA Awards program will begin accepting nominations on April 1. Quality in Construction Award nominations and Operational Excellence Award nominations are due by Oct. 3.
