Richard R. Stander, Sr.

 

Richard R. Stander, Sr. is a native of Mansfield, Ohio. After graduation from Ohio State University in 1940 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, he joined the Ohio Department of Highways where he was employed in the testing laboratory. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving until 1946. In 1946 he joined The Mansfield (Ohio) Asphalt Paving Company, was named President in 1959, and Chairman of the Board in 1987. He has also served as President of Mohican Trucking Company of Mansfield, Fredericktown (Ohio) Sand & Gravel Company, Mount Vernon (Ohio) Asphalt Company, The Elyria (Ohio) Asphalt Company, and the Mohican Sand & Gravel Company of Perrysville. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio.

 

Mr. Stander served two terms as President (1963-65) of the National Bituminous Concrete Association (now known as the National Asphalt Pavement Association). He was also active on many of the Association's committees and was instrumental in the founding and development of the Association's Quality Improvement Program. In 1979, he received the NAPA Industry Recognition Award for his contributions to the Hot Mix Asphalt Industry and the Association. He was elected a Life Member of NAPA in 1989.

 

Mr. Stander has also served as Chairman of the Board of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (1978), as Chairman of the Road Information Program (1984-86), and as President of the Ohio Contractors Association (1962). He is a Life Member and has served as a Director of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, on the Executive Committee of the National Construction Industry Council, and has been active in the Transportation Research Board and the Eno Foundation for Transportation. He is also a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Life Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Member of the Society of American Military Engineers, charter member of the International Society of Asphalt Pavements, and has received the Nello L. Teer, Jr. Award from ARTBA for "outstanding contributions to the transportation construction industry".

 

A Life Member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association and current Trustee of the Mansfield University Foundatiom, he received the OSU Centennial Alumnus Award in 1970, the OSU College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1970, was elected to the Ohio Contractors Association Hall of Fame in 1978, and in 1986 received the CIT "Rebuilding America" award for his outstanding achievements in highlighting the dire need for rehabilitating the nation's infrastructure.
