NAPA Annual Meeting Charts Course for Competitive Opportunities
Driving the asphalt industry toward greater competitive advantages, the NAPA 61st Annual Meeting attracted more than 900 industry leaders to the historic La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, Calif. Attendees enjoyed general sessions, educational breakout sessions, and committee meetings focused on the industry’s growth, productivity, and success; as well as networking opportunities and a new spouse/guest program.
The meeting began with the passing of the gavel from outgoing 2015 Chairman Michael Cote of The Lane Construction Corp. to 2016 Chairman Kevin Kelly of Walsh & Kelly Inc. Cote reported on his activities representing NAPA during the second half of 2015, including his visits to Washington, D.C., along with Kelly, to support passage of the FAST Act five-year transportation funding bill. Kelly shared lessons learned from his years of experience in the asphalt pavement construction industry, outlining ongoing issues the industry must remain vigilant on: market share, pavement performance, funding, sustainability, and safety.
General session speakers included keynoter Robert O’Neill, a former member of Seal Team Six, who shared stories from his missions and his training that demonstrated how if he didn’t give up, his efforts would carry him closer to his objectives and success. Guest speaker retired Notre Dame Football Coach and former ESPN Analyst Lou Holtz talked of doing the right thing and motivating athletes to be the best students, football players, and men they could be. Economists Barry Asmus with the National Center for Policy Analysis and Anirban Basu with the Sage Policy Group presented key economic data and analyzed what it means for the construction and asphalt pavement industries. A general session on NAPA's Pavement Performance Task Group featured Kevin Kelly, Dr. Raymond (Buzz) Powell from NCAT, and NAPA's Dr. Audrey Copeland discussing the needs for improving pavement performance and NAPA’s vision for industry’s role in ensuring performance and durability. Education workshops discussed RAP best practices, market deployment, EH&S regulatory compliance, engineered mix design, fraud protection, and drone technology use in construction.
